I sometimes hear networkers say that they ‘dip in and out’ of events. That’s understandable – they’ll have lots of other things to do! However, dipping in and out usually leads to dipping in and out results.
Well, actually, sometimes it does work. Sometimes we’re in the right place at the right time and hit it off with the right person. They have an urgent need and we’re able to help. Great. But these scenarios probably account for less than 1% of new opportunities as a result of networking!
What happens much more often is that when we meet someone a few times, we get to know each other better. As we get to know each other better – and hopefully develop a ‘know, like, trust’ relationship – we’re much more likely to be able to help each other with the types of introductions we’re looking for.
So consistency is key. Once we’ve decided which event or events we’re going to attend, we need to attend them consistently. Once we become a familiar face, we’ll start to enjoy more benefit.
We help companies, teams and individuals develop a networking plan and process to maximise relationships. If you’d like to chat about your company’s or your team’s networking – and want to win more business – please contact KLT.
