When should we follow up? As soon as possible - but not too soon!
One of the main things that's often done poorly in the networking world is the follow-up – or lack of it! And the reality is that it's so quick and easy to do!
The 48-Hour Rule
A good rule of thumb is to follow up within 48 hours of meeting someone. This timeframe is ideal because:
- The conversation is still fresh in both your minds
- It shows you're proactive and professional
- It's not so immediate that it seems desperate
How to Follow Up Effectively
Your follow-up message should be personal and reference something specific from your conversation. Generic messages are easily forgotten.
Include a clear next step or call to action. Whether it's scheduling a coffee meeting or connecting on LinkedIn, make it easy for them to respond.
